|On the occasion of Sachin Tendulakr's Retirement , Here is what Amitabh Bachchan has to say about Sachin Tendulkar in his own words .|
A dedication for Sachin being brought out asked me to pen a few lines on him : here it is , Mention of the name ‘Sachin Tendulkar’ in any part of the country, or the cricketing world and there is an immediate smile or a gasp in awe that erupts. That to me is the quality of his presence in the lives of our life.
Question the condition of a match in progress where India plays and the first information you ask “is Sachin playing ”, “ has he come in to bat”, “ how much did he score” … the game the situation of the match matters little at that moment, it is always a query that directly relates itself to ‘the Little Master’.
It is beyond conception what Sachin has meant not just to the world of cricket, but to the entire psyche of a nation. If he is well, all else is well. And that really is the level of his importance in our lives.
The news of his retirement stopped many a heart beat around the country. His absence will be akin to a portion of our system leaving us for good. I am certain that many admirers and masters of the game not just within the country but away as well, would have felt the same. Some perhaps, due respects in place, with a sigh of relief that they would not have to face the brilliance of an adversary any more.
I am not technically or professionally knowledged enough to comment on Sachin’s game or his style, prowess, virtuosity and genius, but, when I am asked to think back on him, there is one thought that continuously invades my senses – where was I and what was I doing at age 16 ! And then I do not need to think any further. At an age when we were struggling on how to button up our trousers as it were, this young lad was facing the fiercest bowling attacks ever seen in the realm of the game and coming out victorious !
Without slipping into unconvincing superlatives, may I just say that Sachin the name, the word by itself, is an adjective laced superlative of immense dimensions. The epithets of ‘legend’ and ‘icon’ seem devoid of any substance when we wish to give expression to his worth and aptitude. The voluminous dictionaries of the world shall need to find fresh and suitable words to define this ‘master blaster’. He has decorated the game of cricket through his incredible contribution, and shall ever remain that historic figure in the annals of not just the game of cricket, but in the history of a very proud nation."
